Deer love trees. They love to consume tender buds and will even use the bark as breakfast, lunch and dinner during the winter months. As if that weren’t enough bucks use them to rub off velvet from their antlers in the fall. This is all a part of nature and it keeps the deer happy, but it can be devastating to very young trees. If you live in an area with even a small population of deer protecting your tender ornamental and fruit trees is a must, and it may be easier than you think. In fact, there are several effective methods for keeping deer away from trees.

Physical Barriers

There are a couple of popular physical barriers homeowners use to keep deer away from trees. These include fences and netting.

Fences can be quite effective but are probably the most expensive and laborious option. To be the most effective your fence needs to be a minimum of 8 feet high with some experts saying 12 feet is best. Additional options for fencing techniques include electric fences and slanted fencing. These physical barriers are the best option if want to keep a perimeter around your entire yard, but not for individual trees.

Mesh Netting is a more manageable technique for individual trees or smaller tree stands. Netting is used to place a tent over the trees. This can work for several small trees or single trees, as well.

Tube Netting or Vexar Tubes are diamond shaped netting tubes that are slid down and around saplings to prevent deer browsing. The tubes photodegrade in 3 to 5 years and allow the seedlings to grow while protected inside the tube of netting.

Repellents use scent or taste to detract deer from foraging the buds off your trees or scraping off the bark with their antlers. Many repellents do not work until the deer already has a taste. Unfortunately, when an animal is hungry it will not stop eating because something tastes bad. A more effective repellent will use scent over taste to keep the animal away. Shake Away Deer Repellent Packs do just that. By harnessing the scent of a natural predator, deer repellent packs will stop deer before they get near your young trees.

Keeping your trees safe does not have to be a laborious, expensive venture. With Shake Away Deer Repellent packs you will find a natural, high quality product, which is both effective and easy to use.  Employing Shake Away Deer Repellent Packs in your landscape will keep deer away from your trees.
